English version
Leaves are also used as plates in India especially in the Sothern parts of the country.Banana leaf has been a part of the Indian culture, in the villages having banana trees in the backyard is considered very important as it's need arises everyday.

Here is a picture of the tree from my friend's backyard.

It is a long leaf with a thick rib in the middle that makes it a good plate to be served upon.Eating on this leaf is healthy and hygienic. This practice is more common in villages rather than in cities where you can find this tradition only during any occasions.

It is easily available, cheap and readily disposable which makes it a suitable to be used in functions like marriages where you have large number of people. The used leaves are given to cattle which is again disposed without pollution. As the leaves are long they are cut into pieces large enough to serve food, usually the blunt end is cut in the shape of a tongue and the rest of the leaf is cut like mats.

It's Fruit

Before serving the food the leaf is washed with water and cleaned. The thick rib that runs through the middle of the leaf partitiones the leaf into two halves - top and bottom.Usually the side dishes are placed on the top half and the main dish like rice is placed on the lower half.

Needless to say you cannot use spoons or knife but your fingers (only right hand) as the leaf is tender. Hot food served on a banana leaf absorbs the nutritional value from the leaf and adds a different taste to the food.It is a belief that the leaf has the ability to take away untraceable amounts of toxins from the food we eat.

Luna Mía

This is the translation of a traditional tamil poem "Nila nila odi vaa....". It is sung to kids while giving them food.It is believed that the moon's (nila is a tamil word meaning "The Moon") beauty will distract the child which will make them swallow the food.Anyway that is not the case with my kid!

OK here is my spanish poem.

luna,luna vienes,
vienes sin parar,
trepas una montaña,
traes una rosa

luna redonda mía,
vienes como una dalia,
vuelas como una grulla,
giras como una peonza
